Leadership Influences

I would like to think that my leadership has a positive impact on others, although I cannot call myself a great leader without acknowledging those who have been major influences in my leadership style. My friends, family, and local community have had a huge impact on my leadership and values. When it seemed like my world completely stopped following the gas explosion in December that led to my parents being hospitalized, I was thankful to have a community of people backing me with support when I needed it the most. Whether it meant donating, lending a socially-distanced shoulder to cry on, or bringing joy; everyone brought what they could to the table and that is what I believe leadership consists of.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina Fellows Program has also contributed a great deal of influence to my leadership. This program is where I learned five of the most important practices to be a well-rounded leader: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. These practices I have used in the classroom setting, workplace and even in daily interactions.

Last, but not least, the Morehead Cain Foundation has taught me to embrace “intentional serendipity”. A practice that focuses on always putting your best foot forward with an open mind for what may come next. I have to say, this practice has been the most personal to me throughout my time with the MC Foundation; it has taught me to embrace growth and the unknown.

Each of these influences possesses a style of genuine, honest, and intentional leadership that I desire to emulate as a leader throughout my life.
